Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990)
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Stars: Victoria Abril, Antonio Banderas, Loles León
Almodóvar. A filmmaker so nice behind the camera, he's become mononymous, like Prince. Like Prince, Almodóvar's work boldly engages with sex and screws with gender, but isn't so serious that it can't crack a crass joke.
One of his earlier films, before the unprecedented acclaim of All About My Mother and Talk to Her, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! is a zesty rom-com about a psych patient (Antonia Banderas) who kidnaps a former porn star (Victoria Abril) and—you guessed it—ties her up. All in the name of fated love, of course.
The film's planned U.S. release became part of the impetus for the NC-17 rating. Put the kids to bed.
