Though legendary director Stanley Kubrick died 13 years before "GIF" was named Word of the Year by the Oxford American Dictionary, his work lends itself beautifully to the mini animations.
Gustav Mantel (he's a "GIF aficianado"—how can we get that job?) created mesmerizing GIFS of memorable moments from Kubrick's films, including The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also has a ton of great ones from other non-Kubrick movies on his blog.
