Lars Von Trier has released the first shot from his new movie Nymphomaniac starring his muse Charlotte Gainsbourg. It's his first since 2011's Melancholia which featured Gainsbourg, Kirsten Dunst, and Alexander Skarsgaard.
He's been laying low since he spewed a bunch of nonsense about Hitler and the Nazis during the press tour for Melancholia, but maybe this means we'll get another dose of his Danish brand of crazy.
Nymphomaniac follows a woman (Gainsbourg) through her sexual awakening, which hopefully doesn't involve genital mutilation with scissors. It also stars Shia LaBoeuf, Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, and Stellan Skarsgaard.
The first official photo shows Gainsbourg lying in an alley after being beaten; it is here that Skarsgaard senior finds her. It will be interesting to see whether the infamous von Trier can top himself.
In 2011 he explained how he got the idea for Nymphomanic to the Danish Film Institute. His principal photographer Manuel Alberto Claro warned him about the cliche of aging directors and the women in their films getting "younger and younger and nuder and nuder."
"That's all I needed to hear. I most definitely intend for the women in my films to get younger and younger and nuder and nuder...I realize that nymphomania is not a politically correct diagnosis and I know that the validity of the title alone will be contested."
What a charmer.
