This handsome devil was allegedly found in New Jersey's Raritan River by Doug Cutler. After noticing the sea creature, Cutler captured it and a friend took a photo which was posted to Reddit last week. It's received over a million views since then.
Now, the fuss is about what, exactly, this thing is. According to Outdoor Magazine, it's a sea lamprey, a parasite commonly found in the northern Atlantic. Using their teeth, lamprey inject digestive fluids into their prey and just one out seven fish or humans survive encounters with them.
Some are skeptical about whether or not this is actually a sea lamprey. A spokeswoman for the New York Department of Environmental Conservation told Oudoor "The photo doesn't allow counting of gill openings (seven per side for sea lampreys), but based on size alone, this does appear to be a sea lamprey."
There's also the small chance that it's really just a sea monster, and that there are more of them out there lurking in the water. Probably not, though.
