A meeting place for Malcolm and a number of world figures, including Muhammad Ali, and Fidel Castro, the Hotel Theresa served as headquarters for Malcolm's Organization of Afro-American Unity following his split from the Nation of Islam. The hotel, once called the "Waldorf of Harlem," thrived in the years after 1940, when higher-ups decided to end a longstanding policy of discrimination. It became a vibrant center of black culture, one of the only distinguished hotels in the whole city to accept black guests. Malcolm's famous meeting with Fidel Castro took place here in 1960.
