Facebook Targets Google With Entity Search

With users' help.

Facebook's name may be synonymous with social, but it seems the company wants to become what Google is to search.

Dubbed Entity Graph, the project is similar to Social Graph, which helps Facebook users supply and call up information about friends and family, such as what music they're into, where they last shopped and whether they're single. But while Social covers the personal stuff, Entity Graph will be a one-stop search for information on actual things.

Mitu Singh, project manager for Team Entity, says: "We're trying to map what the real world looks like onto Facebook so you can run really expressive and powerful queries."

In other words, Entity Search is the practical side of search, whereas Social is all about the personal.
