Our smartphones can do almost anything. Internet connectivity, apps and GPS let us hail taxis, find parking in an overpopulated metropolises, and dial a friend by voice command, right from our mobile devices.
Isn't about time our timepieces evolved? An New York Times Bits blog piece states Apple is "experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass." The report cites people familiar with the Cupertino-based company's dealings. Apple has declined to comment on the rumor.
Bits' Nick Bilton postulates the watch could have Siri-powered voice control, maps software and body-activity trackers. The watch could also adopt Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, so patrons never have to shuffle through their bags for their wallets. The watch would be a simple link to your smartphone. We're guessing the smartwatches will link to our social networks, so won't have to take out your phone to check Twitter, Facebook or email.
There could be a huge market for a Internet-connected watches considering the wildly successful crowdfunding efforts of similar products including the Pebble Watch, which raised a record-breaking $10 million on Kickstarter from 69,000 backers, the bluetooth-connected Strata Watch with apps, and the Cookoo Watch that connects wirelessly to a multitude of smartphones.
