Midnight Cowboy (1969)

Midnight Cowboy (1969)

Country: USA
Director: John Schlesinger
Screenwriter: Waldo Salt
Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Sylvia Miles, John McGiver, Brenda Vaccaro, Barnard Hughes

The word "bromance" is a recent neologism, yet it's a fitting way to describe John Schlesinger's seedy, emotionally resonant drama Midnight Cowboy. Powered by a pair of magnificent performances, the film follows a male prostitute (Jon Voight) who forges a close friendship with a sickly con man (Dustin Hoffman).

The only film to ever win the Best Picture Oscar despite an X rating, Midnight Cowboy isn't always pleasant; it is, however, constantly heartfelt. —MB
