Children of the ‘80s should love this story. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers is in talks with commercial director Nic Mathieu to helm its upcoming live-action adaption of the popular anime, Robotech. Though relatively unknown, the studio is confident that he can bring a vision to the movie that can turn it into a successful blockbuster franchise, much like the Transformers series.

For those of you who don’t remember, Robotech was an anime that featured humanity using alien technology to fight off a deadly extraterrestrial invasion force. It’s similar to the concept that Guillermo del Toro is putting on the screen in Pacific Rim, but this pre-dates that by decades.

Robotech will be produced by Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire, and it could be the successor to Paramount’s Transformers series if it doesn’t continue past its fourth installment.
