The ‘90s and early 2000s were a time of greater misses than hits for Woody Allen, with Small Time Crooks acting as a welcome exception. Allen's character Ray, his wife, Frenchy (Tracey Ullman), and their friends (Michael Rapaport and John Lovitz) buy a restaurant that they convert into bakery to sell cookies. But that business is only a front, as their real plan is to tunnel from the basement into a nearby bank vault.

Since this plan requires Woody Allen to perform manual labor, it's no spoiler to say that the tunneling operation fails spectacularly, even as the cookie business turns out to be huge. It’s an oddball premise that's reminiscent of the director’s earliest work.
