It's bad enough that The Office is ending this year, but unfortunately we're going to be the bearers of more bad news now: According to Deadline, former series star Steve Carell is unlikely to return for the final episode.

The possibility was previously put out there by The Office's executive producer Greg Daniels in August, saying that they definitely want Carell to return, but weren't "going to put pressure on Steve to write something only he could do."

Today, however, the possibility was officially shut down by NBC boss Greg Greenblatt. "We’re hopeful but I don’t think (Carell) will," he said during a NBC executive session at the TCAs. "He left in the way he wanted to leave, and he and Greg talked about it, and I don’t think he will. There’s maybe a little Hail Mary pass on a cameo, but I think the decision would be compromising his schedule." Sad, sad.
