Microsoft and Samsung's 'IllumiRoom' Extends Games Beyond the TV

And onto the walls.

Remember the patent that Microsoft filed for a projector that would display images around a television to extend the game world into the real world? Well now that's a thing, apparently. Microsoft unveiled the "proof-of-concept" at Samsung's CES 2013 keynote, and though they didn't announce any plans to actually release the product, it does look cool.

According to Microsoft's Research site, IllumiRoom, as it's called, "uses a Kinect for Windows camera and a projector to blur the lines between on-screen content and the environment we live in allowing us to combine our virtual and physical worlds. For example, our system can change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences."

According to Microsoft, everything in the above video was captured live in real-time, and not added after the fact as special effects. What do you think? Head to the Research site for another video.
