Gas Powered Games, the studio helmed by Total Annihilation creator Chris Taylor, was just hit by substantial layoffs, according to several reports, including one from Taylor himself.

The studio launched a Kickstarter just days ago with a $1.1 million goal and an RPG called Wildman in mind. It's already raised $173,683, though considering that most of the studio's staff has reportedly been let go, the status of the Kickstarter is unclear. Taylor sent the following statement to Kotaku:

We do have a layoff, and we'll be updating our Kickstarter as well with details as well very soon. I'm way behind, so many wonderful people to talk to and share stories with, so it just takes time. It's actually been a fairly positive experience, because I run a very open company and everyone knows what's going on.

We'll know more soon, but no matter what, our thoughts go out to the staff who were laid off today.
