Getting cut was never a problem for Mallory Hagan, but to ace the Miss America bikini competition, the beauty queen needed support.

Hagan turned to Fitocracy, a video-game inspired fitness app that motivates players to level up Starcraft-style, reports BetaBeat. The former Miss New York met trainers affiliated with the Fitocracy community, including Mark Fischer, and then started using the app simultaneously. Gradually, she became a cult fitness icon, encouraging fans to tap dance and comment on videos of her grueling routine.

Since its launch last year, Fitocracy has become hugely popular, with almost 750,000 registered users. The average user spends 3.5 hours a month on the app, higher than Tumblr, Twitter and Pinterest.
