When we reported a few days ago that J.J. Abrams would be the director of the new Star Wars movie, it seemed like a pretty done deal. However, with no official confirmation from Disney, there were still plenty of people skeptical about the hiring. Thankfully the company responded quickly and just put out an official press release announcing Abrams’ involvement in the next chapter in the Star Wars saga, courtesy of Comic Book Resources.

Though press releases tend to be boring, stagnant reads, this one is interesting because it contains the first quote from George Lucas himself on the matter. And, of course, he’s nothing but complimentary about Abrams’ ability as a filmmaker. If you thought the idea of Abrams on Star Wars was nothing but a pipedream, the press release below should get your salivary glands working overtime.

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.
