By Dec. 30, Detroit had experienced 379 homicides. That's a ten percent increased over the 344 that occurred in 2011, a number the city had already reached by Thanksgiving. According to the Detroit News, that number makes the city's homicide rate 53 per 100,000 residents. That gives Detroit the second highest rate of cities with over 200,000 residents behind New Orleans, which had a rate of 54 per 100,000 residents.

On the bright side, 2012 saw a slight decline in crimes including burglary, rape and aggravated assault. Mayor Dave Bing announced that thirteen mini-stations will be reopened in the next few months to increase safety in neighborhoods.
