Your next smartphone may last a lot longer before its beautiful display is marred by scratches. Corning, makers of the tougher-than-average glass used in virtually every noteworthy smartphone on the market, have announced a new version of the glass that's 40 percent more scratch-resistant.

Or maybe they've announced the announcement. The new glass, Gorilla Glass 3, will make an appearance at CES in Las Vegas next week.

In addition to being less likely to develop scratches, Corning says Gorilla Glass 3 is 50 percent stronger once the integrity of the glass has been damaged by cracks. Look for GG3 to appear on the next iPhone as well as other top-tier handsets set to debut in 2013.
