42-year-old Merry Jane Clift was arrested on charges of animal cruelty after allegedly stabbing her dog in the face with a knife while high on cough syrup. According to authorities, the Glendale woman stabbed her Shiba Inu several times around its eyes on Dec. 28.

Her neighbors told police that she was banging on the door and begging fellow residents to kill her. Police followed a trail of blood to her apartment, where they found her dog, Huckleberry. Clift was sitting in the hallway, and they discovered a bloody kitchen knife with a 10-inch blade.

Clift initially told police that she was struggling because of "child custody" issues, but would later claim that she forgot everything because she had experienced a psychotic episode. The dog survived the attack and is recovering at the Pasadena Humane Society.

A humane society spokesperson has promised that the dog will not be returned to Clift.
