Unfortunately, it was a fairly dismal weekend for the box office. According to Deadline, the trio of new films released - Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Movie 43, and Parker - all underperformed tremendously, and despite a promising amount of ticket sales on Saturday, earnings were still 15% lower this weekend than they were last year at this time.
Starting with Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, the film managed to take the top spot, but only earned a total of $18 million between standard and 3D showings - not good news, considering it was originally projected to earn $25 million. As for the other two new releases this weekend, Movie 43 only pulled in a total of $4 million to claim the number seven spot, and Parker earned a disappointing $7.2 million for the number five spot.
As expected, Mama took the number two spot, Silver Linings Playbook climbed up to number three, and Zero Dark Thirty took number four.
