Premieres: January 30

Why we're excited: FX currently has one of the best original programming slates out, and this winter it's adding to that with The Americans, a Cold War espionage drama set in the 1980s, starring Keri Russell as a sleeper KGB agent masquerading as a doting housewife.

The premise may seem random and well-worn, but then again a Cold War-era (regarded by many as the height of espionage) story could be a welcome contrast to espionage shows that center on contemporary conflicts. Plus, Russell's brief but memorable cameo in Mission: Impossible III proves that Felicity can, in fact, be taken seriously as an ass-kicking spy. Thirdly, premiering at the best time, in the winter, just as the Homeland thirst is kicking in, could create some healthy competition for the acclaimed series.
