The genre film community frequently sees new artists come in, release a few strong flicks, and then crossover into the mainstream. It's a well-worn rite of passage, and one that's often encouraging to watch. In the case of England's Ben Wheatley, though, it's more than encouraging: It's downright thrilling.
After impressing everyone with a dark comedy about criminals (Down Terrace) and a disturbing horror film about a doomed hitman (Kill List), Wheatley is ready to unleash his excellent lovers-gone-wild oddity Sightseers (as previously discussed here) onto American cinemas. But that's not the only movie he'll debut in 2013.
Switching things up in more ways than one, A Field in England is a period piece filmed in black-and-white that follows soldiers looking for treasure—against their commanders orders. Along the way, they indulge in some magic mushrooms with some undesirable results. Well, undesirable for the characters, not audience members.
