Amish gone bad: Edward Gingerich
Plenty of American traditions have no place in Amish society—mustaches, divorce, and murder are among them. But 20 years ago, Edward Gingerich became the first and only Amish man convicted of murder after he beat his wife to death and then disemboweled her... all in front of their two young children.
Because he was considered mentally ill, Gingerich was convicted on the much lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison (of which he served all of it). In 2007, Gingerich was in the news again when he attempted to kidnap his 15-year-old daughter from his parents, who gained custody of the children following his conviction.
In early 2011, Gingerich hung himself inside a barn in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania.
