The University of Miami has angered its African-American student body after sending out a text message alert last week to students and faculty that read "UMIAMI alert black male on campus wearing black and white tennis shoes with black writing and black shorts." The text was supposed to warn students about a fleeing laptop thief, but instead just pissed a lot of people off, as it gave no indication that anything was wrong. Other than that there was a black male on campus.

The university followed that up with another warning claiming that the black man was armed, and that students should stay in doors. That alert was inaccurate. The suspect, 20-year-old Del'Neco Streeter, was never armed, and the school apologized for the erroneous alert.

"The initial ENN was both incomplete and insensitive and the University of Miami offers its sincere apologies," the school said in a statement. "University leadership has already launched a full investigation of the incident, the ENN and University procedures."

So, here's what actually happened: Former defensive back Robert Wright had his laptop stolen, and received a call from Streeter offering to return it for a $1,000 reward. Wright called police, who helped him set up storm, but Streeter managed to escape at some point. He was later arrested and released on bond.
