According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, over 33 million dogs in the U.S. are overweight. Seeing as how PetMed says pet obesity is caused from overfeeding and lack of exercise, the fault lies squarely with the owner. It's these same owners who would sooner buy an in-home elevator to help their dogs make it up flights of steps than change their diet and walk 'em a bit more frequently.

We're guessing that's what prompted the creation of this dog stairlift prototype. Made in the U.K. to shuttle dogs up and down steps, the device attaches to the side of a staircase and features a paw-shaped button that dogs can be trained to tap when they want to be whisked away. The basin even lowers to make it easier for the pooch to hop in.

There's no word on if or when this prototype will make it into production. So if you have an overweight dog you make want to think about putting the pup on some sort of weight-loss plan.
