Yesterday morning, a 60-foot finback whale washed ashore in Breezy Point, Queens, motivating residents, rescue groups and firefighters to try and save it. It was eventually determined that the whale was emaciated and sick, and that there was next to nothing that could be done to save its life.

Riverhead Foundation executive director Rob DiGiovanni said today that the whale is believed to have passed on last night. “As of right now, the animal was lost last night,” he said. “It looks like it moved a little off the shore, relocated and it does appear to be dead.”
