NYPD data says that, as of December 9, there have been 385 murders in New York City this year, a 20 percent drop from the same time last year. Should the numbers stay consistent, the year's final homicide total could reach roughly 390. At the same time, the Department of Health and the Office of the Chief Medical Examinerindicate that approximately 475 New Yorkers commit suicide each year.
If these numbers don't deviate, suicides will exceed homicides in the city this year.
