We already reported that Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained will be the longest film in the director’s career, but apparently it could have been even longer. There were rumors that one cut of the film ran well over three hours, and while the director trimmed a lot of material down to make the film’s length more manageable, there is still plenty of Django that the world might not see. Luckily, in an interview with The Playlist, the director said that re-releasing an extended cut of the film isn’t out of the question.
"I'm not exactly sure [when I might]," Tarantino said when asked if an extended cut would be released. "I'm going to wait until the film goes around the world, does what it does. And then I'm going to make a decision. I make these scripts that are almost novels. If I had to do this whole thing over again I would have published this as a novel and done this after the fact. Maybe next time. I could do what Kevin Costner did with the expanded edition of Dances with Wolves, and I could very well do that. Because if I put some of that in I have to change the story. But I want this version to be the story for a while."
Depending on the commercial success of Django, this director’s cut could very well wind up in theaters eventually. However, if that never happens, you can probably expect it to at least happen in the form of a DVD/Blu-ray.
Django Unchained comes out on Christmas.
