It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a Guillermo del Toro movie actually hit theaters. Sure he attaches his name to plenty of projects, but they very rarely ever come to fruition, so it’s obvious why people are actually anticipating Pacific Rim so much. After a five-year absence from directing, this will be del Toro’s return, and what better way to do that than with a movie about giant robots beating on gargantuan monsters?

Now the trailer for the movie has finally arrived, and it gives us exactly what we expected. Here we see monsters attacking cities on Earth in grand CGI fashion. And to stop them, the human race (including Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Rinko Kikiuchi) creates mountainous robot bodies that people pilot remotely from government facilities to stop them.

We’re sure there is more to the plot in there somewhere, but this trailer doesn’t exactly elaborate on that. Instead it just shows us plenty of money shots featuring monsters and robots fighting for the fate of humanity. There are times when this movie looks epic in scope, and others when it looks like a big budget episode of Power Rangers.

It’s clear that del Toro is looking to give sci-fi/fantasy fans exactly what they want, but it’s also possible that this movie will be too much of a good thing. We’ll know for sure when Pacific Rim gets released on July 12, 2013.
