Nowadays, when something's hot on television, it's hot on Twitter. Nielsen, the company that keeps track of TV shows' popularity via its signature ratings system, will explore that connection in a new ratings chart it's launching with the help of the social network.
Nielsen Twitter TV Rankings will track how popular a particular broadcast is among Twitter's users and deliver a new "standard metric around the reach of the TV conversation on Twitter," the two companies announced today in a statement.
“As a media measurement leader we recognize that Twitter is the preeminent source of real-time television engagement data,” Steve Hasker, President of Digital Media Products at Nielsen said in a statement.
The new rankings will launch in time for the fall 2013 TV season. Expect lots of Twitter marketing and hashtag synchs from your favorite TV shows around then.
