Jon Stewart Almost Quit "The Daily Show" in 1999

Worst alternate reality ever.

None

How's this for the worst alternate reality ever? While speaking at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival alongside Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart revealed a jarring piece of information: Back in 1999, only months after he took on the job as host of The Daily Show, he considered quitting.

"What I did not realize is, a lot of the people who worked there were assholes," he explained to the crowd, referring to some of the show's staffers that he'd inherited from previous host Craig Kilborn. One of those staffers was, of course, Stephen Colbert, whose first interaction with Stewart was described by The Huffington Post as being marked by "friendly competition" - not unlike their interactions now.

Stewart, of course, ultimately made the decision to stay in the job as host, though he added that it took him about two and a half more years to really get comfortable on the job. Thank God for that.
