Now individuals without a Facebook account can take advantage of the Facebook Messenger service thanks to the latest Android app update.

In the new Facebook Messenger for Android, users are allowed to log on with a name and phone number, rather than having to enter their account info. This update makes Facebook a direct competitor with services like GoogleVoice, Kik and WhatsApp, which was rumored to join the Zuckerberg empire last week.

What's more, Androind users can connect with non-Facebook friends on an international level instantly, too. The Messenger update was also released in India, Indonesia, Australia, Venezuela and South Africa this week.
