Eleven inmates and six guards died in a shootout following attempted jailbreak in the city of Gomez Palacio. The shootout occurred when security stopped inmates from escaping through a tunnel in the rear of the prison. The incident comes just a day after President Enrique Pena Nieto announced that a national police force had been created to fight crime linked to drug violence, kidnapping and extortion.

This is the first violent incident to take place at a Mexican prison since Nieto assumed office at the beginning of the month. Though his new plan has been designed to fight violence, there has yet to be any mention of how to address the violence that takes place inside of Mexican prisons.
