25 Celebrity New Year's Resolutions We'd Like to See in 2013

Show some empathy.

Celebrity: Chris Brown

There's a greater problem in society when we can allow debate about the integrity of a guy who viciously beat his girlfriend then proceeded to show hardly any real remorse for his actions in the years that followed. His apologies have been wooden and contrived at best, and in the recent months he seems to have dropped that schtick all together, instead getting a new tattoo of a battered woman's face on his neck—one that looks suspiciously like Rihanna.

Whether you like his music or not, we shouldn't forget the fact that this is a man who, from the way he's acting, doesn't truly grasp the gravity of what he's done. Recently, people have been debating Rihanna's decision to get back together with Brown, with many blasting her for going back to the man that abused her. This is called victim-blaming. Yes, Rihanna is not making the best decision by going back to Brown, but that doesn't change the fact that the greater problem lies with him, not with her choice. He is the one who raised his hand to his girlfriend, and he is the one who needs to understand that it is completely his fault.

Brown's career will certainly be forever clouded by his actions, but it isn't too late for him to begin showing some real, sincere empathy and regret. Not getting into violent fights with Drake at NYC nightclubs, not insulting women on Twitter, and learning how to keep his raging tempter in check would be good places to begin. —Tanya Ghahremani
