On October 9, 1983, Tiger Town premiered on the Disney Channel. It was the first of many made-for-TV movies produced for the network, but at this point in history, it was billed as a Disney Channel Premiere Film. It wasn't until the late '90s that the Disney Channel Original Movie came into existence, and really grabbed hold of a generation.

The next seven years saw the number of DCOM's released balloon, peaking in 2000, when 12 new originals premiered over the course of as many months. Always squeaky clean, and with an eye for plots that would allow them pay lip service to diversity, they helped raise a generation. Youngsters would connect over recited lines from Johnny Tsunami and Zenon, a shared vocabulary.
