Every year, a slew of wretched, no-budget horror flicks get released straight onto DVD, and, fortunately for mainstream audiences, only the most passionate of genre fans acknowledge their existence. In 2012, though, one such embarrassment to horror found its way into a limited number of movie theaters, while a worthwhile film like The Loved Ones barely received a single midnight showing. Awesome.

Save for its villain's legitimately badass mask (see above), Smiley desperately wants to be "contemporary horror" but never rises above ineptitude. It's about a serial killer who's summoned when people type "I did it for the lulz" (We're not kidding.) into an Internet chat room. Which is what you'd hope director Michael Gallagher tells friends and family when asked why he'd waste time with such bad acting, unimpressive gore, and lame-brained screenwriting.
