Worst movies: Battlefield Earth (2000), The Air I Breathe (2007), Vantage Point (2008), Street Kings (2008), Powder Blue (2009), Repo Men (2010), Freelancers (2012)
Proof that he deserves better: Bird (1988), The Crying Game (1992), Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), Panic Room (2002), The Last King of Scotland (2006), The Great Debaters (2007)
There's no reason why Forest Whitaker shouldn't have been under consideration for our recent list of the best character actors in movies right now. Well, there is a good reason, actually: Whitaker has hit-or-miss taste (mostly miss, though) when it comes to picking movie roles.
For every Panic Room or The Great Debaters, there are three or four flicks on par with his recent straight-to-DVD crime non-thriller Freelancers, co-starring 50 "I Can't Act" Cent and an equally slumming Robert De Niro. After winning an Oscar for 2006's knockout biopic The Last King of Scotland, Whitaker seems to have adopted a "I'm just happy to work" philosophy—similar to Cuba Gooding, Jr. before him. It's severely unfortunate for a guy who should invoke as much immediate gratification as, say, John Goodman.
