With rumors of next-gen consoles on everyone's lips, it's not surprising that fans would want to learn more about Valve's inevitable Source follow-up. What is slightly surprising is just how candid Valve head Gabe Newell may have been with those fans.

A small group from 4chan's /v/ board showed up at Valve HQ to present Gaben with a massive card and a Team Fortress 2-themed gift for his birthday, and the ensuing conversation was filmed and posted to Youtube (check it out above).

As Lambda Generation points out, around six minutes into the video the following exchange takes place:

Fan: Is Valve potentially already working on a new engine?

Fan: Source 2? Could or… could not be?

Gabe Newell: We’ve been working on Valve’s new engine stuff for a while, we’re probably just [incomprehensible, subtitled as: "waiting for a game to roll it out with"]

Fan: Is it going to be more than just an extension to Source? Is it an entirely new engine?

Gabe Newell: Yeah!

Source 2 was first spotted in some code for Valve's Source Filmmaker some months ago, but this is the first time the developer has even come close to officially discussing it. By the way—when Gaben mentions "a game to roll it out with," do you think he could be referring to Half-Life 3 (or as fans have been jokingly referring to it lately, Ricochet 2)?
