Twitter Unveils New Email Sharing Feature

We didn't realize it was 1999.

Who said email was a dying form of communication? Not the folks at Twitter. The company today unveiled a new service that allows users to email a tweet directly from Twitter.com.

Why would a company that has been blamed for the declining use of email introduce a feature that relies on the very technology its said to be damaging? Because while you and many people you know may be tweet on the reg, Twitter realizes not everyone's friends and family have made the jump.

"Of course, you can retweet any of these to your Twitter followers," said Stefan Filip, an engineer on Twitter's growth team, "but sometimes you want to share with another group, like your college roommates or your parents or a friend who isn’t yet on Twitter."

When you email a tweet, the recipient will be able to view the tweet whether they have Twitter or not. The feature will be rolled out over the next few weeks. In order to email a tweet, all you need to do is click the "More" button.

Long live email.
