College: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Date: May 25, 2011

An unknown hacker(s) planted malware onto UWM’s database server and exposed the records of over 75,000 students in the process. The university caught onto the incident weeks after the malicious software was originally installed and discovered its social security database had been breached as well one month later. It’s been suspected that the installed software was being used to “identify cutting-edge research” the college was creating. But the bigger concern lies in the malware spreading across other severs and causing a widespread hack. USW officials have said investigators have found no evidence of stolen data, but indicated that the primary group affected would be employees, and current and former students. Duh! Authorities have yet to crack this one.
