College: University of California, Berkeley

Date: October 2004

Taking full advantage of a well-known vulnerability found in one of Berkeley’s unpatched campus computers, a group of hackers broke into the Berkeley database and acquired information on over 1.4 million identities. The exposed data came from the In Home Supportive Services program, which provides in-home care for the elderly, and included names, SSNs, telephones numbers, addresses, and DOBs. Till this day, it remains one of the biggest college security breaches ever.
