Sims is widely regarded as the first black supermodel, but that didn't come without facing a lot of adversity to get recognized in the '60s. She began modeling while she was on scholarship at FIT and studying psychology at NYU at the same time. After retiring from the industry, Sims went on to pen several books on modeling, health and beauty.
