Steven Spielberg Confirms That He Will Not Direct The Next "Star Wars"

Claims that it's not his genre.

None

Despite being best friends with George Lucas since early on in their respective film careers, Steven Spielberg has come out to deny any interest in directing the next Star Wars trilogy. In a quote provided by Access Hollywood, Spielberg said, “No! No! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.”

Spielberg was always going to be a long shot to do the movie, so this news isn’t necessarily surprising to us. This just means that we’ll have more directorial rumors to chew on for the next few months until an official choice is made. Interestingly enough, Spielberg was Lucas’ choice to direct Return of the Jedi in the early ‘80s, but declined because it would have put him at odds with the Director’s Guild, which Lucas had dropped out of years prior.
