A mobile version of Microsoft Office, the productivity suite that has been the lynch pin of Windows for a generation, will become available for iOS and Android devices early next year.

According to a report in The Verge, Microsoft plans to launch free app versions of the three most popular Office programs— Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The free apps will link to your Microsoft account and allow you to view any documents that you have stored elsewhere. To create/edit documents, you'll have to pay for a subscription to Office 365.

The Verge expects Office Mobile to launch for iOS in February or March, with an Android version following later in the spring.
