Just weeks after a grueling election seemingly drained the nation of its sense of humor, President Obama presided over the annual pardoning of a White House turkey yesterday, according to ABC News. But this year was a bit different because the President picked which bird would be spared by setting up an online Facebook poll to pick the winner. And the winner was Cobbler the turkey.

Not only did the poll pick Cobbler, but President Obama was also feeling generous enough to pardon another bird named Gobbler, who was the runner-up. This is the first time since the Bush/Dukakis presidential election of 1988 that Americans only had turkeys to choose from at the polls.

"You know, they say that life is all about second chances. And this November, I could not agree more," President Obama joked during the ceremony. "So in the spirit of the season, I have one more gift to give. And it goes to a pair of turkeys named Cobbler and Gobbler. The American people have spoken, and these birds are moving forward."

On a slightly more disturbing note, last year’s pardoned turkey, appropriately named Peace, was euthanized on Monday after an illness, according to CNN. We smell a conspiracy.
