Other than the fact that J.J. Abrams has been confirmed as the director again, we actually know very little about the sequel to his 2009 Star Trek reboot, titled Star Trek into Darkness. But according to The Playlist, some lucky fans will get a sneak peek at the movie sooner than expected, as the site is reporting that Paramount will debut the first nine minutes from the film at 500 IMAX 3D locations across the country.

These screenings will take place on December 14, before IMAX showings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. We’ve seen this strategy before with The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, and it worked to create a massive buzz. Just don’t expect the studio to officially release this footage online afterwards. If it’s anything like what Warner Bros. did with Batman, this will only be seen by those lucky few who catch it properly in IMAX.

Star Trek into Darkness will hit theaters on May 17, 2013.
