In her first public interview since being named CEO of Yahoo! in July, Marissa Mayer spoke at Fortune's Most Powerful Women event Tuesday evening about her plans to lead the company in a new direction. The Sunnyvale-based corporation will focus heavily on news, sports, and apps for mobile devices, Mayer said.

"We have a terrific set of assets on the web--all the things people want to do on their mobile phone. The interesting thing is when you look at what people want to do on their phone, it's mail, weather, check stock quotes and news. That's Yahoo's business. This is a huge opportunity for us because we have the content and all the information people want on their phones."

Mayer also stressed that the company's new direction isn't entirely reliant on mobile development. "We really want to have a global suite of products that are truly excellent," she said.
