Still waiting for Hollywood to make a video game movie adaptation that is actually worth your time? Well Warner Brothers is going to try to do just that with a reboot of the Mortal Kombat film franchise, which is apparently going into production sooner than we had anticipated. And during an appearance at the Marseille Webfest, studio executive Lance Sloan revealed details on the film's budget.
"We're preparing right now for the [Mortal Kombat] film with Kevin Tancharoen, [who] directed the digital series for us," he said. "He's at the helm of the forty, fifty million dollar film."
$50 million is virtually nothing for a movie that depends on special effects and action scenes, so it remains to be seen if that will be enough to bring the video game franchise to the screen properly. But Tancharoen already has experience with the Mortal Kombat property, and maybe he can still capture its spirit without the big bucks.
Here is a possible plot synopsis for the film from Worst Previews: “The reboot is rumored to follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has 'out of this world' powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is.”
Let’s just hope the final product is a bit better than that description.
