Microsoft Sold 40 Million Copies of Windows 8 In Its First Month

Not bad.

Though the latest version has received mixed reviews at best, Microsoft still knows how to push copies of its Windows software out the door. The company has sold 40 million copies of Windows 8 since its launch a month ago, and has reportedly improved on the upgrade rate of the previous version, Windows 7.

Of course, Microsoft has a built-in mechanism for proliferating its software, since essentially all newly manufactured PCs sold around the world have begun shipping with Windows 8 pre-installed. Still, that it has been able to get Windows 8 in front of 40 million customers is such a short time is a big win for Redmond. It will help as the company tries to convince developers to build custom apps for the OS, which is a radical, mobile and touch-friendly departure from previous versions of Windows.
