Maine and Maryland Become the First States to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage by Popular Vote

History made.

None

Last night, both Maine and Maryland became the first states to legalize same-sex marriage by the popular vote. Same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., but had never been approved by the public vote until last night. The Associated Press reports that each of the previous thirty times the issue appeared on state ballots, it had been voted down.

While same-sex marriage is supposed to be approved in Washington state, it is expected to fail in Minnesota. Regardless, this is a huge moment in history.
