It's official: Lenny Kravitz is set to portray Marvin Gaye in an upcoming biopic from Glastonbury director Julien Temple. According to Deadline, the film - which is Kravitz's first lead role - will focus on the period of time during the 1980's that Gaye spent in Europe attempting to curb his addictions and get his career back on track, with the assistance of British music producer Freddy Cousaert

Additionally, producers have definitely secured music rights for the film, so any 30 Rock Janis Joplin/Janet Jopler-esque song rewrites won't be necessary.

Filming on the project is set to begin next year.
